What is Galerie?
Galerie is a macOS menu bar app that automatically changes your desktop wallpaper to fine art masterpieces from world-renowned museums.
Where does the artwork come from?
Galerie sources artwork from five major museums:
All artwork is public domain or CC0 licensed, made available through each museum’s open access program.
How do I access Galerie?
Look for the paintpalette icon in your menu bar (top-right of your screen). Click it to see the current artwork and access controls.
How do I change how often the wallpaper rotates?
Can I filter which artists appear?
Yes! Open Preferences and go to the Artists tab to select which artists you’d like to see. This feature requires Galerie+.
Can I filter by art medium?
Yes! Open Preferences and go to the Mediums tab to select oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, and more. This feature requires Galerie+.
How do I skip to the next artwork?
Click the Galerie menu bar icon and press the “Next” button.
The wallpaper isn’t changing
Images are loading slowly
Galerie caches images locally after first download. Initial loads depend on your internet connection. Subsequent displays of the same artwork will be instant.
How do I clear the image cache?
The app doesn’t start at login
Does Galerie collect my data?
No. Galerie does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information. All preferences are stored locally on your device. See our full Privacy Policy.
What network connections does Galerie make?
Galerie only connects to museum APIs to fetch artwork information and images. No personal data is sent.
